Lost or Found a Pet?
- Q: My dog or cat is missing. What can I do?
Immediately upon realizing your pet is missing, take as many of the following steps as you can. Quick and thorough action increases your chances of finding your pet.
- Ask as many helpers as you can to quickly search the area where your pet disappeared, especially before dark. However, also remember that healthy animals can travel up to 20 miles away in
a half day.
- Put up posters in and around your neighborhood or the area where your pet went missing. Include the following:
- Easy to read title such as "LOST DOG";
- A brief and simple description of your pet. Example: Male Australian Shepherd mix, 75 pounds, black and white;
- Your name and phone number;
- Leave out one or several of your pet’s unique identifications such as one blue eye, black socks, etc. so that you can determine whether a caller really has your pet;
- Add "Reward" if you wish but be wary of pet scams. Never send anyone money prior to your pet being returned. Many people have been taken advantage of by various false stories to trick them into sending money when they actually don’t have the missing pet;
- Call local veterinarians and animal shelters to see if your pet has been found and brought in;
- Place an ad in the newspaper;
- Register and search for your lost pet on Pets 911 by phone at 1-888-PETS911 or the internet at www.pets911.com; with the Arizona Pet Line by calling (602) 252-2727 or Missing Mutts by calling (480) 898-8914.
- Q: What should I do if I find a pet?
A: The same as above but substitute "Lost" for "Found".
Please do not keep the animal until all avenues have been exhausted in trying to locate the owner. A family may be agonizing over their pet’s disappearance! Don’t assume the pet wasn’t loved because it didn’t have ID, was underweight or injured. The animal may have been wandering and searching for its home for weeks.
